Linda Raschke: Process as a Career

HaqqSeTraderPublished 2026-08-27Updated 2026-08-27

Linda Bradford Raschke (born 1959) is one of the most respected short-term traders of the modern era: a former options floor trader who moved off-floor in the 1980s, traded S&P and other futures professionally for decades, ran her own hedge fund, and was interviewed in Jack Schwager's The New Market Wizards. With Laurence Connors she co-authored Street Smarts (1996), one of the most-referenced books of concrete short-term setups, and her later Trading Sardines (2018) is a candid memoir of the professional's actual life.

The method's character

Raschke's edge has always been presented as craft rather than secret: a small set of recurring swing patterns (momentum leads price; retracements after strength; classic setups like the "Holy Grail" pullback and "Turtle Soup" failed-breakout fade from Street Smarts), traded on short horizons with immediate risk control and no attachment to any single trade's outcome. She is emphatic that patterns are contextual tendencies, not certainties — the trade management around them does the earning.

What she actually preaches

  • Preparation as the edge: her routine of nightly homework — levels, scenarios, "if this then that" — so the session is execution, not invention. The plan exists before the open.
  • Volatility awareness: reading whether the environment favours range or trend before applying a setup built for one of them.
  • Professional humility: constant small losses as a business cost, and equity protected first — her line that the best traders have no ego about exiting.
  • Routine and health as performance inputs — treated as seriously as the charts, decades before "trader performance" became a genre.

For a retail trader, Raschke is the model of what a sustainable discretionary career looks like: written preparation, a finite playbook, and a record of every session — process compounding across decades rather than one legendary trade.
