Van K. Tharp: You Trade Your Beliefs

HaqqSeTraderPublished 2026-08-27Updated 2026-08-27

Dr. Van K. Tharp (1938–2022) was a research psychologist who became one of trading's most influential teachers — the coach interviewed in the original Market Wizards, founder of the Van Tharp Institute, and author of Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom (1998) among other books. More than any other figure, he is responsible for the vocabulary modern journals are built on.

The ideas that stuck

  • R-multiples: express every result as a multiple of the initial risk (R), so trades become comparable and a system becomes a distribution of R values. If you have ever written "+2R", you are using Tharp's notation — it is the spine of trading statistics.
  • Expectancy: the mean R per trade of that distribution — his popularized definition of what an edge is, and the number every journal now computes.
  • Position sizing as the main lever: his most provocative and defensible claim — that how much you risk per trade does more to determine your equity curve (and your survival) than entry technique, which is why position sizing deserves systems of its own.
  • "You don't trade the markets; you trade your beliefs about the markets." Objectives, psychology and self-sabotage come before technique — his courses famously spent more time on the trader than the trades.

Reading him critically

Tharp's marble-bag simulations and expectancy arithmetic assume independent, stable distributions that real markets only approximate, and his later ventures ranged well beyond trading. But the core kit — R, expectancy, sizing as a first-class system, written objectives — is simply how rigorous retail trading is now done, and every page of a modern journal quietly assumes it.
